September Compilation
Septebmer 2019, the start of a new year of homeschool! For the first time ever in our homeschool journey we completed a full year of curriculum in the 2018/2019 school year, and also for the first time did not school over the summer. After a nice unschooled break of camping, beach trips, sunshine, and gardening, we are back to structured learning!
We started the year off slow, gathering curriculum and getting set up with a laptop from our super cool charter school, TeachNW. Excited to have an official school computer this year for the boys to study Spanish and math on, as well as practice typing and learn Lego Robotics.
Story of The World: Volume II is continuing as a the hub of our activities after finding the boys enjoyed volume one very much last year. We have explored how the Celts fought the Romans and then how the Romans, divided, fell. I was interested to learn about Justinian and the Byzantine Empire, as it was completely new history to me. We ended September studying medieval India and doing some in-depth reading about Indian culture and Buddhist religion.
The older two asked to continue the All About Reading program, so we started year two and are supplementing with early readers from the library. Only Emmet and Avery have continued Handwriting Without Tears this year, as Michael still has most his book from last year to finish. It was like pulling teeth to get him to do one page, so we focused on handwriting in practical settings instead to finish off the year.
Nature studies continues to be the main focus of our science. We started in January this year with a program called Exploring Nature With Children. It gives wonderful prompts each week with a poem, book list, and information on each topic. When we reach the end of the year, for it is a year round program, we will most likely switch things up the in third quarter of the year and do an Earth Science focus, learning about natural features and biomes.
I am waiting for approval to add the local YMCA to our Charter schools approved vendor list so we can get a family membership. This will enable us to take swimming lessons, do health focused programs they offer, as well as work out multiple times a week. They even have an indoor track so family running can happen!
Art is one of the most important topics to me, and one of the most loved by all three boys. Spontaneous art happens almost daily, with painting, drawing, or coloring, however I try hard to tie in our schedule projects to what we are learning. For September we made Fresco paintings like in the Ajunta Caves in India. Each week we add drawing to our nature journal including seed anatomy, leaf anatomy, and the moon cycles. We also will be learning a lot about textiles this year, and how people of medieval days may have made clothing items. We studied about weaving in September and will begin crocheting in October with the plans to finish a completed project by end of November.
Whew. Beyond all that we start Boy Scouts, and take engineers, taekwondo, and gardening classes at our local homeschool-school. Additionally we were meeting twice a week with our co-op, but for various reasons it is on a break right now. Exctied for this year and already planning ahead to next year! :D
