Week 9th-13th
I am starting to think I should have named my posts based on what week we are on, because I keep getting confused!
Last week we did Story of the World Chapter 20. It compared and contrasted the difference between knights and government systems in Europe versus Japan. We learned that knights spend a lot of time training for war, and so do samurai; however, samurai focus also on making time for poetry, meditation, and gardening. A true ying-yang balance in their lives.
One boy received Highlights as his birthday gift from my parents this year, and it is half in Spanish and half in English. So we have read it for our Spanish lesson this week. They love the seek and find pages!
We did our writing work books and the next lesson in All About Reading and All About Spelling. The boys have also been reading Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Williams. One will do Piggie's words and the other Geralds, and it is just the cutest to watch them read together.
Our ceiling and art wall is covered in snow flakes! This is the first year the older two really got into making their own, having gained the dexterity to cut the snowflakes out.
Again we haven't done a lot in our technology unit this month, the boys have been building a lot with the legos and have been using Minecraft quite a bit. Avery just recently decided he was ready to try and I am amazed by what he can craft and build just from watching his brothers play! They are constantly talking about the supplies you need to create items, and how you have to arrange them in the crafting grid to have the computer create said item. Michael is also determined to reach the end of the game in Survival mode, where he has to craft and find all the ingredients to create a special portal to reach the end of the game. Despite it being a "computer game" we play only by ourselves, never online, and many elements of the game use programming, cause and effect, and circuit building designed into play.
Swim lessons ended this week. Unfortunately the boys have come down with a cold since so we have not been able to go by the YMCA and pick up their swim cards to see if they passed to the next level or if they still need to work on current skills. We will pick swimming back up again after we get back from our long trip in January.
We have done a lot of "in air" math this week, calculating our allowances and planning gifts for each other. The boys had to use their own money (weekly allowance, money earned from extra chores, and money they earned at the bazaars in November) for gifts this year to help them with money skills. Avery was the exception and John and I helped him buy gifts for each other (Avery is giving us gifts we needed that cost more, ha ha, where as he is giving his brothers cute little things he bought with his own money). We also keep doing flash cards, as both older two think it's a super fun "game". I love this age and hope we can keep making homeschool fun for a long time.
Two weeks until Chrismtas!!!
