Exploration of Dessert Biomes week 1 and week 2
We have decided to move on from Exploring Nature with Children and do a biome focus for science for the rest of the year. The boys were ecstatic, "Can we do the biomes in Minecraft?!" Michael wanted to know. Luckily, Minecraft and real life biomes are the same, so this subject has easily captured their attention, and can be called reap science, haha.
We read several books about deserts and the animals who live there. They werw very fascinated to learn more about scorpions and that there are 7 foot long lizards in Australia that can climb trees. Yikes! (It reminded me of Rescuers Down Under" so that is our movie night movie this week) We decided to do a magazine cut out of each biomes plants and animals and made a desert one.
For art this week we made desert biome dioramas. It was our first time attempting this type of craft and they did really well! Some were very into the background, and Michael was the most focused with several plants.
Story of the world took us through the Crusades in chapters 18 and 19 and we learned about prince John and King Richard and how the Robin Hood stories make Richard look much more valiant than he actually was.
The boys have found renewed interest in their lego weDo and made some contraptions that I took no photo or video evidence of before they turned them into something new.
In All About Reading chapter 14 introduced us to the first job of Silent E. We have always said the E gives its power to the first vowel, making it say its name. In chapter 15 they have us play the name game by saying silent E asks the vowel to say its name, thus creating the long vowel sound. Similar idea, just a different context to how silent E works. Avery did letters X and Y last week and will do letters Z and then start lower case next week.
In spelling we practiced TH, CH, and SH words.
PE was at parks, meeting the new co-op twice a week for hikes and small crafts. We made paintbrushes from nature one day, did a cloud nature journal study another, and made really cool earth candles in our own garden with them this week for Imbolc. Today was supposed to be the zoo, but we are all feel tired so opted to stay home.
We re-wrote our schedule so we do math every day. It alternates either workbooks, flashcards or prodigy. Avery made a prodigy account, however it is for 1st grade and up, so he 'plays' while his older brothers answer the questions for him. They also figured out how to log into separate devices, find each other, and 'battle' together to solve problems. We can add that to their technology studies as well, haha.
Finally we have Spanish. The older two have been reading our beginner Spanish readers. I have to sometimea read a line and they copy me, but I am pleased to say each time we read they recognize ans can say more words on their own. We listened to chapter 3 of our audio book last week and will listen to the next chapter tomorrow when we head into Portland for a fun science class we found and then to our charter school Valentines party.
Overall a good two weeks of school to kick off the new month!
Cheers,
The Dillmans
