Grasslands, Worms, and Laura Ingles
I don't know about you, but I am ready for February to be over. My birthday is the first week of March and it has always been the light at the end of the long winter tunnel for me. I know, Punxsutawney decided it is spring now, but mostly that means instead of snow or rain, here in Oregon we get another few weeks of grey. I really can't complain too much as we have had some sunny days. Yesterday, for example, was beautiful. The boys are down with a cold, so we skipped our normal playdate yesterday but went for a walk in our woods. A small stream runs at the bottom, and from our porch we could hear it, which is very unusual. Sure enough instead of a trickle it was a rushing, and full, little stream. The boys and I marveled over this cool bridge a fallen tree and made, and we all labored hard getting back up what turned out to be a very steep place to decided to head home from!
Tuesday we did meet up with our nature science co-op and learned about worms! One friend brough some composting worms they just got and we helped make a new, and bigger, home for them while we read a bool about the purpose of worms and what they need to survive.
We have moved into Grassland Biomes and had good luck finding books on the subject. Some blended dessert and grassland features and animals, so it was a good land type to switch to. The boys were surprised to learn that grains are grass. We did a cookie day with wheat and oat flours as well, not intentionally after reading about grains, but I think it is where the boys gor the idea to bake.
Chapter 20 of Story of the World was on the Diaspora. The boys really liked a story they told about a Rabbi of Cordova using his smarts to keep them from being kicked out of the town. We had a good conversation about trickery and how the mayor was using evil tickery to throw the Jews out, however the Rabbi's trickery helped save them. It was a interesting learning moment of weighing good and bad lies.
The boys have done two pages of math and writing, flash cards twice, played prodigy, and did some review of syllable rules in All About Reading. Avery has not enjoyed his worksheets in the pre reading, and the second section is repeating all the letter, but in lowercase. We have decided to skip that section and started the letter sounds section doing A on Wednesday and will do letter B sounds on Friday. He seemed much happier with the cut and paste project over the coloring sheets from section 1 and 2.
PE was accomplsihed through the park and our walk at home. We can sign up for swimming started this weekend! We are all excited to get back to it soon!
Last Friday we had our TeachNW Valentines party, which was a lot of fun!a we also went to Mad Science that day to attend a class on sticky science. We explored what items stick to velcro, and then again with a plastic paddle and static. They ended with using different tapes to test strength by hanging weights. The boys had a blast. I was super excited to learn another homeschool science group, Glen's Gizmos, is building a classroom site in a town very near to us! The boys have said doing science experiments is what they want to focus on next year, so i'm looking for all the options!
We made valentines cards and boxes at the end of last week, but have not gotten to art this week yet. Tomorrow we have All About Spelling, and Spanish listening. The older two read us our Spanish beginner readers. We have also started reading Little House on The Prarie to match our grasslands focus and because we haven't done a long read aloud in a while and I would like to start incorporating it again.
Hoping for a restful weekend, for us and for you!
