Week 7: Static Cling and Squanto

Our week started a little differently! Eden Acre's was short staffed, so they had to cancel the day. We decided to take advantage of the extra day and started our school! The boys are warming up to the Chemistry curriculum we chose. Some weeks there are lots of hands on parts, and others more reading- of course the hands on weeks are much more enjoyable! We talked about what makes up an atom and practiced changing the positive and negative charges of atoms by rubbing balloons on our heads and trying to stick them to walls! We had success with the first attempt, and after that no balloons would stick! We wondered why, and plan to look it up in the future!

Tuesday brought co-op day! We went to a park with many trails and everyone brought wheels! Bikes, scooters, and a skateboard! After letting the kids burn off lots of energy, we read a book about friction and gears and made little cars out of straws, clothespins, and buttons. It was a great day!

Wednesday we focused on Story of the World and read Chapter 6 on Squanto. We had the library fairy bless us this week, and all my holds came at the right time! We did quite a bit of reading about what life was like for the Plymouth Pioneers, about Squanto's life, and the Wampanoag people.

Our art for the week focused on autumn, and I asked the boys to paint a picture of what they thought of when they think of fall time. Michael made a pumpkin patch, Emmet made hay in a barn, and Avery made a red sunset with a tree make of pumpkins.

The boys have been asking for potstickers for quite a while, and feeling left out as I haven't eaten potstickers in about 5 years, I asked them to help me make them from cassava flour. It turned out SO good!! The boys always love stuffing the dough!

We ended the week with a beautiful weekend day and the boys helped us put up some fencing. The farm part of our life takes a lot of time and energy, the boys help here and there but are not required, since it is mostly my passion and not theirs. ha ha. But we have cows escaping the poor fencing that the property came with, so we are slowly building much better fencing to keep them in! I am learning about rotational grazing and teaching the boys as I learn. Trying to be holistic/naturally-collaborated farmers with nature. :)

Have a fantastic week!

Cheers,

The Dillmans.
