Week 16 and 17 January 4-14th: Catch up!

Whew! Christmas break has come and gone, and so has the fist two school weeks of the new year! Both weeks were a bit short, so I am combining them in an attempt to catch up as well!

We visited OMSI with co-op on one of our adventure days. They have a new ice and snow science exhibit and we also watched a planetarium show on constellations in the winter sky.

We are working through our human body unit, reading the chapters on digestion and adding to our paper model and Michael started sewing a stomach for our skeleton.

Avery enjoyed the water exhibit in the turbine hall at OMSI. We practiced moving around the pieces to see what would happen if no plants were around to soak up extra water-- it caused the storm drains to overflow sewage into the rivers! Oh no!

Our second adventure day was to AC Gilbert house! They brought back the bubble room!!! It was everyones favorite. We also spent a lot of the day outside playing on the huge play structure.

Michael was inspired by another project in the Steve Spangler Science book. This project you created your very own lightbulb with a mechanical pencil graphite and alligator clips. Using another science kit we have, Michael scrounged up all the pieces and created it on his own!

You can just see the graphite glowing in the middle of the picture below. The actual instructions say to use eight D batteries, but we didn't have enough so Michael tried it with just a few AA batteries, six in total. We think it might have lit up like a light bulb with the proper amount of batteries. It drained the batteries quite quickly!

It was also my husbands birthday! We made him cake and gifted him some experiences, a family trip and a broadway play ticket!

Our digestive unit had us making some digestive tract models!

My little brother comes once a month and leads us in DND campaign. The boys really enjoy this and spend a lot of time planning and researching to prepare.

Last year we partook in 1000 hours outside challenge and also the Kids Full Moon Club. We managed to record 950 hours outside in 2021. It is possible we had more, as I forgot to count hours for two months during the year and added what I thought we had probably gotten instead. The Full Moon Club had fun activities each month for each moon, we didn't always do them, but we did make a phrenology wheel of what we enjoyed each month of the year.

We did poetry tea time one Friday. I try to at least once a month read our nature themed poems that pertain to that month. The boys like it because I usually bake a treat for the occasion. Maybe someday as an adult they will eat a scone and remember poems about snow and January.

We had a beeswax candle rolling kit hanging out in our project box and the boys choose to do it one day when they were bored. They have enjoyed burning them a little every few days.

With co-op we discussed New Years Resolutions and sat down and wrote out what ours are. We are working towards making a time capsule to store until next New Years.

We hope your January has been well!
